Japanese Star Sand
Regular price
$8.50
Okinawan star sand displayed in a round acrylic case. Be sure to check them out under magnification. The majority of sand contained in each case is an exoskeleton, however, you can expect to find occasional shells mixed in.
Take a stroll along Hoshizuna no Hama, located on Iriomote Island, and you’ll notice that the sand is made up of shells produced by microscopic, unicellular protists known as Foraminifera. When Foraminifera die, their shells remain in the sea and the tide brings them ashore.
